FN 26-02 NHI Rights Peruvian Bees

Field Note - Stingless Peruvian Bees - 2025-12-29

Two Peruvian municipalities have passed laws giving legal status to native stingless bees. A petition is circulating for the Peruvian government to make these laws national. Groups from other countries (Bolivia, Netherlands, United States) have expressed interest in the effort. Crucially, the laws grant the bees rights to legal representation.

  • Possible first signal in broader NHI rights movement.

  • Worth consideration of legal representation based on intelligence: Cetaceans, cephalopods, primates, proboscideans

  • Worth consideration of legal representation based on ecosystem benefits: Hymenopterans, many types of plankton

  • Once an integral view of the biosphere is adopted, the concept of extending legal rights to non-human entities becomes logical.

The approach to legal status for animal intelligences could serve as test bed for interacting with emerging non-human intelligences - specifically, AGI.
